What is artistic make-up and how is it done.

You are fascinated by the colors, the transformations of the face and how well-done makeup can create magic, because it is not true that everything that is beautiful or effective is difficult to do: artistic makeup is simple. Now I'll tell you why.

What is artistic makeup

I've read various things about it and the expression I agree with most is: Artistic make-up is a true art like painting and sculpture .

It should be divided into: artistic face make-up or face painting and artistic body make-up or body painting. What is the additional difficulty compared to the painting mentioned above? The fact that a face already has characteristics, volumes, colours. Not a canvas.

Where do you start from to do an artistic make-up?

From the basics. An excellent makeup artist who specializes in artistic makeup knows that to break the rules you have to know them. There cannot be an artistic make-up that does not take into account the basic make-up . You must merge knowledge of the rules related to facial correction with knowledge of colors and the effect of colors between them, to create simple makeup - even short in execution - and with absolute impact.

Artistic make-up

What are the steps to create an artistic make-up?

  1. The artistic makeup is prepared at the table. Differently from a make-up commissioned by the final client on whom you will do corrective ceremonial make-up, artistic make-up almost never starts from the type of face of the model, in fact it is usually the last piece. Artistic make-up starts from an inspiration: nature, a colour, a sunset, a song, a photo... a "red thread" that will then lead you to create the final make-up on the model.

  2. Here, starting from this initial input, you start to think and create a face chart that will contain all your ideas (if you have applications to paste, paste them on the face chart too. Don't leave them in your head).

  3. Then decide which are the best products and tools to use.

  4. At this point, decide which model has the physical characteristics best suited to your idea. By suitable characteristics I mean that perhaps an angular face emphasizes your idea, or perhaps a light eye, afro hair etc etc

  5. Create it on the model. You can try it if you are not sure of your idea, or do it directly in "good first time"

I'll tell you about an experience.

Artistic make-up inspired by a painter

I took this shot together with the photographer Umile Lionetti for all the advertising material of a fashion and art event: Christmas Party Competition. I started from the creative style of the painter Leonid Afremov. I created the headdress by printing one of its canvases, cutting it into pieces and reassembling it on this ray. I then imagined that the color dripped from the painting and ended up on the model, crossing the face slightly and pouring onto the chest.

I started with basic make-up, continued with eye make-up and then finished with the casting on the forehead and chest.

This shot shows you how important preparation is in artistic makeup. Not only for the time you have to dedicate to any accessories such as the creation of the spokes but also and above all to understand which materials allow you to achieve that result.

If you look at the cover photo of this article you can see the neck very well. To have that effect, I positioned the gold not with a brush but with a spatula.

I'm putting my Pinterest account here to show you how artistic makeup can be transformed into a real work of art.

Instead here I'll give you a list of products that I use.

I love this black

The Diamond FX palette

Mehron kit including this one

I love Graftobian products. I have all their metallic pigments to buy along with the fluid that makes them creamy

Consider that these are some of the things I use and that above all you must have in your kit the things you need to create makeup that speaks of you. For example, if you don't like the metallic effect, it wouldn't make sense to buy them because you wouldn't do metallic makeup anyway, it's against your nature and art never goes against nature.
